Internal communication

Digital Signage as part of multichannel employee communication at Pilatus

Digitale Shopfloorboards für Pilatus Aircraft

INITIAL SITUATION

Founded in 1939, the Swiss company Pilatus Flugzeugwerke AG develops and builds unique aircraft worldwide. The Pilatus team consists of over 3,000 dedicated employees, making the company, headquartered in Stans, one of the largest employers in Central Switzerland. Independent subsidiaries in the USA and Australia are also part of the Pilatus Group.

At the start of the project, the aim was to replace the existing digital signage solution, which was getting on in years and was therefore prone to errors and maintenance-intensive. Together with those responsible at Pilatus, we drew up a comprehensive needs analysis and started with 3 pilot screens. After the rollout to 16 systems, new requirements and new projects were added on an ongoing basis. You can find out more in the Solution section.

SOLUTION

The basis for the successful collaboration was the replacement of the existing digital signage solution. To this end, various individual solutions were integrated into an overall concept. These screens are still in use and display a wide variety of content depending on the location: From flight radar to trainers from the training centre, the menu plan and internal and external news and much more.

The introduction of the shop floor boards was a major milestone in the collaboration. In daily meetings, managers discuss target achievement and improvement measures with the employees involved directly at the point of action. Our shop floor screens are used for this. During meetings, the meeting leaders can use the touchscreen to access the required tools and dashboards, display content and even make changes directly using a mouse and keyboard. There are now 40 such systems in use – and the trend is rising. When the screens are not in active use, they display internal information such as analyses or the department stream from Beekeeper.

In 2022, Pilatus introduced the Beekeeper employee app, which is used very actively by employees. To increase the impact of the content, additional screens were installed at 14 locations that exclusively display «Beekeeper content». The big advantage of this is that the content is seen «in passing», even if employees do not open the app for a while or mobile phones are not allowed in the workplace due to safety regulations. To communicate in an even more targeted way, the posts displayed can be filtered not only by stream, but also by label.
